Looking for a Charity to support!

by Elsie on November 30, 2006

All right all, I’m actually beginning very very very early to plan for my birthday party…..hmmmm….it’s on February 6 🙂 I love to celebrate my birthday. Anyway, I’m going to be celebrating big, with a fantastic yoga birthday party. It will be a pretty fabulous class, celebratory and extra joyous. The thing is, I want the class to be a donation only class with proceeds going to benefit a worthy cause. I’m searching right now for something, so if any of you have a charity that you truly support or even something local and small, let me know. Tell me your story, post it on the comments, so that even if I don’t choose your charity to support, maybe someone who reads this might! We may just raise some good cashola for some well deserving cause! It’s the season to give back, let’s carry it on, and on 🙂

Oh yeah, my party would be happening sometime in the first 2 weeks of February, the date has not been set yet. It will be hosted by Lululemon Athletica and those guys know how to do it right, so…if you don’t live in LA, possibly plan on taking a trip in to celebrate in LaLa land yoga style 😉 Of course all of you in Southern Cal, save the date! More updates coming very very soon! Oh AND get ready for the legwarmers!

birthday cake!

The thing with legwarmers is that there are only a few people who can wear them unironically. You…Jennifer Beals circa Flashdance, and maybe Punky Brewster? Anyhow, it’s never to early to start thinking about birthdays!

As for charities, the American Red Cross is always good, as is any local Boys and Girls Club.

By the way, my hips are going to be so mad at me tomorrow! 🙂

mad hips are happy hips 😉 and I think legwarmers are the key to the giggling heart! plus they are really great for doing armbalances and not slipping off yourself

Dear Elsie,

I am still enjoying your yoga classes on my ipod. However, I miss seeing you every Friday at the Center for Yoga.

I would love to have you support the Walk to D’Feet ALS. ALS is also called Lou Gehrig’s disease. It is a progressive neuromuscular disease that destroys the motor neurons. Patients loose their ability to move, talk, eat and breathe. Curt Schilling, a Red Sox pitcher, says “ALS is like being in jail when you have not committed a crime.” On January 20, The ALS Association Arizona Chapter is having a Walk to D’Feet ALS to raise money for our patient services, ALS clinics and ALS research.

Just Thursday a Phoenix company announced that they have found the 50 genes that are defective in sporatic ALS. The gene for genetic ALS was found several years ago. The race for the cure is getting closer to the finish line so money for research is critical right now.

Since we breathe and move in yoga, it seems fitting that your yoga birthday bash should help those who cannot move and breathe. I would love to have all my LA yoga buddies, who I sincerely miss, to help me with this cause.

This will allow you to set up a team. From your team site other people can join your team and get their donors to contribute. You can be a virtual walker, so no one has to drive to Phoenix to participate. There are great prizes for the high fundraising teams or you can chose to have all the money go to The ALS Association Arizona Chapter.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Sweet Elsie,

How I have missed your yoga classes since I moved from LA to Phoenix! Now, of course, I can do your class anytime and anywhere thanks to your podcasts. They are just super!

In yoga we link our breath with movement. We gain strength, flexibility and peace.

In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS, which is commonly called Lou Gehrig’s disease, patients loose their ability to move, breathe, swallow, and talk. The motor neurons gradually die while in most patients their mind remains active. The median life expectancy after diagnosis is between two and five years. It is one of the most difficult diseases to deal with as the patient is sentenced to a virtual jail of progressive immobility and lost of the critical functions of breathing, swallowing and talking without committing a crime.

It is fitting that we should all celebrate your birthday by making a donation to help those who cannot move and breathe with us in a yoga class—real and virtual.

In honor of Elsie’s birthday and to show appreciation for her podcasts, please log on to http://www.alsaz.org for more information on ALS and to make a donation which will help those who cannot move and breathe with us.

ROOTS: my favorite charity right now is corazondevida.org i just spent an amazing day down in a tijuana orphanage with the kids that this oorganiztion helps to feed and send to school, and i can say, it isn’t a priviledged life, but it is so so beautiful to see the faces on these children when we show up and how happy they are to be safe and supported… WINGS: another charity that i recomend is the ‘one world family fund’ that is supported by the art of living foundation and the international association for human values, it fills a gap in disaster relief by providing trauma-relief programs that include breathing, yoga and meditation to help those who have been impacted by disasters process the emotional and mental suffering they are facing. the time i spent in austin texas working with kids evacuated from new orleans was amazing. this was such an important resource for them to be able to have, and one that very few organizations are capable of providing… hope this helps… happy birthday! jai shakti devi !

February birthday’s Rock. My wife and I both share the 17th as our special day. I started doing yoga for mind body health, but I also believed that it would help my Asthma and it has. Therefore my favorite charity is the American Lung Association.

Hi Elsie,

I’ve never posted on your website before, but when I read that you were looking for potential charities to donate to I had to respond.

While most of the recommendations have been for very large (and extremely worthy) organizations, there are smaller organizations doing international work based out of the US that may also be of interest to you. Developments in Literacy (www.dil.org) promotes girls education in rural Pakistan and Relief International (www.ri.org) focuses on relief projects both within the US and abroad. Both organizations are committed to keeping the overhead (administrative) costs of their work to a minimum so you know that your donation is going directly to those who need it most.

It’s wonderful that you are doing this.

See you in class!

Happy Holidays,
Annie
