Artfully Planting Seeds – How’s Your Soil Doing?

by Elsie on May 4, 2013

how do plant the seeds for the life that you want?

How do you feel right now? When you stop moving, and finally settle, even if for a moment?

I want you to focus on the sensations in your body. How does your body feel when you open up to your exhale?

Tired.

Hungry.

Achy.

Delighted.

Settled.

Anxious.

Resistant.

Yummy.

Scared.

Ungrounded.

Cold.

Hot.

Happy.

Be most aware of the blinks of insight that you get, flashes of intuitive sparkle that are often overlooked as pesky little thoughts. This needn’t take longer than 5 minutes, depending on your ability to “let yourself in.” you might get that much needed insight pretty darn fast.

Quickly write it down.

So what’s this all about?

It’s Spring. (at least in the Northern Hemisphere.) It’s planting time! And you’ve just quickly surveyed your soil and started plotting your garden.

This is the first time ever that I’ve wanted to plant a physical garden. In fact, just last night I had a dream that I had this long, tall, very thin black trough that randomly appeared in my house. Of course my first thought was ”this would be the perfect place for me to grow my first garden!”

Duh!

So obvious. In my existing home.

(If you had seen the space that we currently call home you would know that this would seem completely impossible.)

I had these feeling thoughts flash within me as I dreamt: “Why hadn’t I thought of this before,” “It can totally happen here,” “I had no idea that this was here,” “I want to plant right now!”

I simply didn’t think I could plant a garden, nor did I want to, I thought it was beyond me. I thought I needed all kinds of special stuff to begin. I thought I wasn’t that kind of girl 😉

My current living space in no way supports the growth of a garden – I said to myself. HA!

Here’s the thing. I’ve been teaching about seasons for a while and love to bring the larger themes of each season to my teaching, but my connection to the seasons was bit removed. I lived in Los Angeles for goodness sake! I had no idea what seasons really were.

I learned about the qualities and themes of the seasons via my teachers aka those that had first hand experience. I got it, as these are universal themes that we have all experienced in one form or another, so we get the gist of it even if we haven’t actually had direct experience.

Now, experiencing the seasons fully here in Pittsburgh, I feel the essence of seasons in my bones. I’m in them. The connections within and without are bursting at the seams. And I’m recognizing what it’s like to teach and to learn from a much richer place, the one that can only come if you choose to be in it.

So, I see.

If you let yourself go and breathe in Spring, in whatever form it reflects itself back to you, you will feel its energy. Some of us might get hit over the head with it as we’ve been cooped up for months do to winter and the emergence of life, colors and sunshine is slapping us in the face. It might be pretty easy to sense it.

For some of us, like it was for me in LA, spring might not be as strong, but it’s still there, it still pulsates differently, we just have to work on tuning our antennas a little bit more. 😉

What seeds do you want to plant this season?

As my dream reflected so clearly back to me, and re-inforced what I’ve been living this past year, you can start to plant the seeds of what you want to grow NOW.

The trough appeared in my existing home.

I always thought I needed to have a house with a garden, or at least a yard to start planting.

We stop ourselves from truly investing in growing that which we want in our lives because we feel it’s not the right time, we don’t have the stuff, we’re not ready…you know what I’m talking about right?

Yea. I’m here to tell you that the time is NOW and it’s the perfect time. You don’t need anything special. You just have to DO IT.

So, go back to the little exercise above and start the planning. Step into it. Give yourself the gift of 5 minutes to uncover where you’re starting from and what you have.

I’ll add one more layer to it: Do it every day for a week (or as much as you can).

No expectations.

No limitations.

Just settle.

Close your eyes.

And feel inside.

Get immersed in your senses: touch, smell, see, hear, taste.

For five minutes or less.

Anywhere.

Anytime.

Choose to remember.

Then come talk to me, and tell me what you uncovered. What insights surfaced?

What does your existing soil feel like? What kind of growth is there already? What kind of growth do you want to be there?

Is it time to change your seeds around a bit?

We’ll continue on this venue on the next part of this little Spring series, where we delve into the simple depths of seeding, plus I share with you what I’ve been planting in my garden and why I’ve chosen to do it.

You really must come back to play with me!

I plant seeds daily throughout my life in others in the hopes that they may blossom and destroy vasanas. But ya know, I guess if the people aren’t ready or ripe enough the seed will never germinate. I guess all I can do is keep planting seeds in the hopes that a flower will bloom.

Thanks for the read.

Love the readiness or ripeness! So true. I’m blown away how even the same seed under the same conditions with one slight variable can offer a different kind of bloom…even a non-bloom.

I’m always schooled by letting go of preference.

Thanks for coming to play with me for a bit Daniel! ♥

Your welcome and thank you for your post. I skim the web daily reading similar blogs and quite often they fall short because they promote the external only ie. asanas, pranayama and mudras, but they miss the true essence of yoga, the yoga within.

I spend my time trying to promote the true nature of yoga as my sadhana.

I’ll keep reading your blog and keep up the good work!

I think what you posted was actually very logical.
But, consider this, suppose you typed a catchier title?

I mean, I don’t want to tell you how to run your blog,
but what if you added a post title to possibly get people’s attention?

I mean Artfully Planting Seeds – How’s Your Soil Doing?
| Elsie’s Yoga Kula is kinda plain. You should look at Yahoo’s front page and note how
they write post titles to grab people to open the links.
You might add a video or a related pic or two
to get people interested about everything’ve got to say.
Just my opinion, it could make your blog a little bit more
interesting.
